The value for the James Madison Fellowship differs depending on funds received from sponsors. Also, the maximum amount for each fellow is $24,000. Likewise, this is to cater to the period of study, and fellow may not receive more than $12,000 for one academic year of study.

Types of Fellowship
The Foundation fellowships are of two types:
1. Junior Fellowships
The Junior Fellowship is for brilliant college seniors and also graduates who have no prior teaching experience and intend to teach secondary school students in American history, American government, or civics classes where you will teach topics on the Constitution in grades 7–12.
Also, Junior Fellows are to complete graduate study within 2 academic years of full-time study.
2. Senior Fellowships

What is a “qualifying master’s degree program”?
All James Madison Fellows are to pursue and complete a master’s degree in one of the following (listed in order of the Foundation’s preference):
1. Master of Arts (MA) in American history, political science, or government
2. Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) concentrating on either American Constitutional history (in a history department) or American government, political institutions, or political theory (in a political science department). MAT degrees without required constitutional coursework cannot be approved.
3. Master of Education (MEd) or the Master of Arts or Master of Science in Education with a concentration in American history or American government, political institutions, and political theory
I already have a graduate degree. May I still apply for a James Madison Fellowship?
Yes, but the Foundation will strongly encourage the second master’s degree to be a “content degree,” i.e., Master’s of Arts (MA) in American history, political science, or government.
What are the selection criteria?
Applicants would compete against other applicants from the states of their legal residence. Likewise, applicants are evaluated on their demonstrated commitment to a career teaching American history, American government, or civics classes where you will teach topics on the Constitution at the secondary school level.
